Enjoy A safari tour to Arusha National Park, which is located in northern Tanzania, northeast of Arusha town, and covers a geographical area of approximately 137 square kilometers (52.9 square miles), primarily with three landscapes: Mount Meru, Ngurdoto Crater, and the Momella lakes. The European section of the park, according to the guidebook, dates back to 1876, when Count Teleki, a Hungarian, stayed in the Momella area. He mentioned how many hippopotamus and black rhinos he had seen. Unfortunately, the latter is no longer found in the park. The Trappe family moved to Momella to farm in 1907, using large areas of the current park as a cattle ranch. Mrs. Trappe, the first woman in East Africa to become an expert hunter, voluntarily set aside a large portion of Momella land for a game sanctuary. The Arusha National Park was established in 1960, and the farm was incorporated into it. The Ngurdoto Crater National Park was established in 1960, and the Mt Meru area became part of the park in 1967.

The park’s name was then changed to Arusha National Park, which was derived from the indigenous Waarusha people who used to live in the area. The tribe was of Pare origin and used to live in the Kilimanjaro region. They first arrived in what is now Arusha in the 1830s and lived in the Selian area. Most of the people at the time there were Maasais. The Waarusha tribe adopted many Maasai traditions, but they remain distinct. We agree that the Waarusha still speak the same language as the Maasai, but they are farmers, whereas the Maasai are pastoralists. The Waarusha take pride in being productive farmers, and despite farming on the same land for generations, they manage to keep the land fertile by protecting the soil and conserving nature. This 137-square-kilometer national park, named after Arusha, northern Tanzania’s self-proclaimed “safari capital,” is one of Tanzania’s most misunderstood, protecting a variety of habitats ranging from open lakes and rolling grassland to Afro-montane forest and moorland.

The rough Mount Meru is the main feature, an extinct volcano with an elevation of 4,566 meters, making it Africa’s fifth highest mountain. The game-viewing roads also provide spectacular views westward to Kilimanjaro, whose snow-capped peak, which is only 50 kilometers away, frequently emerges from its cloudy shroud in the late afternoon. Arusha National Park, best known for its lush landscapes and spectacular scenery, is an ideal half-day excursion at the start or end of a safari in northern Tanzania. Game viewing does not compare to that of the region’s most well-known parks; of the so-called Big Five, elephant and leopard are scarce, and lion and rhino are non-existent. – but experts will find plenty to enjoy, from colobus monkeys swinging flexibly through the forest canopy to flocks of flamingos tingeing the lake margins pink.
