How much does a gorilla permit cost?

In Uganda, gorilla habituation permits costs USD $600 per person and USD $1500 for permits for gorilla habituation experiences. Only one person, one day, and two locations—Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park—are permitted to trek gorillas in Uganda using a single gorilla permit.

At the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) offices in Kampala, the country’s capital, you can purchase or reserve gorilla permits by paying USD $600.00 per person for international nonresidents, USD $500.00 for foreign residents with work permits, and SH250,000 for East African citizens. Please take note that starting on July 1st 2020, Uganda gorilla permits will cost $600 for international residents without working licenses in any of the East African community nations and $700 for non-residents. If you reserve your gorilla excursion before July 1, 2020, you’ll save $60. Amakula African Safaris plans all-inclusive gorilla safaris, such as our well-liked 3-day low-cost gorilla safaris to Bwindi.

After paying $1500.00, you can obtain permits in Rwanda from the Rwanda Development Board offices (ORTPN) in Kigali or Ruhengeri (next to the PNV).

Allocation of Gorilla Permits

We are happy to share information about the distribution of gorilla licenses in Uganda and Rwanda. To trek gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park, you need a valid gorilla permit. Gorilla licenses were formerly distributed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority on a first-come, first-served basis, and one may choose to purchase a permit for a particular gorilla family. In other words, a person would go to Uganda Wildlife Authority and get a gorilla permit for the Rushegura Family, which is located in the Buhoma Region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

How gorilla permits are allocated

Beginning in January 2014, the Uganda Wildlife Authority began awarding gorilla licenses based on regions rather than gorilla families. Each of the four zones in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to a unique gorilla family. These areas include Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Buhoma in the north of Bwindi, Ruhija in the east of Bwindi, and Ruhija. Currently, in order to purchase a permit, you must select a region, after which they will provide you a permit for that region.

What happens then?

On the day of your gorilla trekking expedition, you will be assigned to a gorilla family based on your level of physical condition and interest after you arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. If there is room, they will include you in the tour if your interests involve trekking a particular gorilla family of your choice. If there is room, you are welcome to hike with your traveling companions—friends or families—if this is what you would like to do. You can request a straightforward, intermediate, or challenging journey, and they will assign you in accordance with their capacity.

The gorilla families per region

The most popular area of Bwindi National Park, the Buhoma Region, is home to three gorilla families: the Mubare Gorilla Group, the first gorilla family to be habituated; the Rushegura Family; and the Habinyanja. There are three families in the Ruhija Region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Bitukura, Oruzongo, and Kyaguriro. The Kahungye, Nshongi, Mishaya, Busingye, and Bweza gorilla families can be found in the Rushaga region, which is located south of Bwindi. One gorilla family still exists in the south in the region known as Nkuringo.

Depending on your interests and level of fitness, Amakula African Safaris will help you reserve gorilla permits, provide advice on the availability of permits, and help you decide which region to visit.
